ENT thyroid and parathyroid surgery
Thyroid and parathyroid surgery is a speciality of ENT surgery which essentially covers the following procedures: hemi thyroidectomy, total thyroidectomy, ¾, 7/8 parathyroidectomy, parathyrtoid adenoma removal.
The aim is to eliminate thyroid cancer, remove a troublesome thyroid tumour or cyst, treat primary or tertiary hypercalcaemia. The aim is to prevent thyroid cancer from progressing, reduce the difficulty of swallowing (dysphagia), reduce thyroid pain, improve dyspnoea, reduce tracheal compression and avoid the complications of hypercalcaemia (heart rhythm disorders, osteoporosis, etc.).
It mainly concerns adults.

Thyroid surgery
Total thyroidectomy is the complete removal of the thyroid gland and thyroid lobectomy is the removal of a half thyroid. Thyroid disorders are very common in the French population, ranging from benign nodules present in 5% of the population over the age of 50, to thyroid cancer, the 5th most common cancer in terms of incidence (number of new cases per year). The operation is performed under general anaesthetic by an ENT surgeon, and requires hospitalisation for 2 to 3 days. It is performed on adults.
Parathyroid surgery
The parathyroid glands, of which there are 4, can be the site of adenoma, diffuse hyperplasia or cancer. The resulting primary or tertiary hyperparathyroidism may lead to ¾ or 7/8 parathyroidectomy. The operation is performed under general anaesthetic by an ENT surgeon, and requires hospitalisation for 2 to 3 days. It concerns adults.
